One of the most popular Croatian islands, the island of Hvar is the longest island in the Adriatic and one famed for its hillsides covered in pine forests, lavender-scented air, olive groves and vineyards – which produce 47 varieties of wine – all surrounded by warm inviting waters. This picturesque island holds the record for the greatest number of sunny days per year and has many beautiful beaches and isolated coves.

The charming town of Hvar is the highlight of the island, where ancient walls and palaces overlook the busy bay. Its car-free streets are lined with impressive historic Venetian buildings, one of the largest squares in Dalmatia, as well as restaurants, boutiques, and a vibrant nightlife. The town is home to one of the largest squares in Dalmatia, Trg Svetog Stjepana (St.Stephen’s square) as well as the famous Katedrala Sv. Stjepana (St.Stephen’s Cathedral) and the oldest community theatre in Europe, the Renaissance theatre (founded in 1612).

While Hvar may be the most stunning town on the island, other smaller villages dotted along the coast and nestled among the beautiful landscape are also well worth a visit. The oldest town in Hvar, Stari Grad (Pharos) is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Stari Grad Plain, a preserved agricultural landscape created by ancient Greek colonists in the 4th century BC.

The island is particularly lively in July and August.
