Attractions for children include the Madeira Theme Park, the Santa Cruz Aqua Park and the Madeira Story Centre. Many hotels have children’s facilities. Kids can also enjoy the outdoors in numerous parks, playgrounds and beaches.
Eating & Drinking
There are restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets, and in general eating out is good value for money. Fish dishes are a definite favourite. Meat lovers will find a big variety of dishes, such as the ‘spitada’ (meat on a skewer). Sweets like the traditional ‘Madeira Cake’ or the ‘Bolo de Mel’ (honey cake) are deservedly popular.
Famous from the Island is the exquisite Madeira wine, and other local drinks unique to the island like ‘Nikita’ (beer, vanilla ice and pineapple) or ‘Poncha’ (very boozy with a bitter lemon taste).
Entertainment is a low key affair in Madeira although there are some good clubs and bars to suit all age groups. Many hotels offer live entertainment including folklore evenings.
There are a wide variety of shops and boutiques in Funchal. Typical souvenirs include wickerwork, embroidery and the famous Madeira wine.
