Taormina
Taormina, the most fashionable and well established Sicilian resort, has endlessly winding medieval streets and tiny passages, each with its own secrets – great restaurants, cafés and ice cream bars. Taormina is beautiful by day but in the evenings its atmosphere is simply enchanting, whether you stroll the illuminated streets or indulge in the view of the coast over a delicious dinner.
Within its eternal stone walls, old Taormina has fascinating archaeological monuments and medieval homes like Palazzo Santo Stefano, with magnificent views of the sea completing the picture. The main shopping area of Corso Umberto is pedestrianised and dotted with designer shops.
If you’re looking for a glimpse of Sicily’s beauty and history from many angles in a single place, Taormina is an excellent choice. The city is located on a plateau below Mount Tauro, for which it is named, some 200m above the sea level and with amazing views of Mount Etna volcano in the distance. The beaches of Taormina Mare can be reached by cable car, and the main beaches are in the Bay of Isola Bella and the Bay of Mazzaro.
